I was nine years old. I was staying in Warri then, with my Aunt, who was a nurse. She usually closed late from work cause she was a matron.

That night, my elder brother was not around, my sister was not around (she was in school) and my brother who was born before me…………began acting strange that night. Very strange.

So we were playing……laughing…….just like kids……..suddenly he fell on the floor and started shaking. Convulsing , maybe. I didn’t know what to do. Confusion racked me. I didn’t want to attract undue attention by calling our neighbours cause I thought her was still playing with me.

Next thing, he started asking, “Where am I?” “Where am I? What’s going on? Why is everywhere dark?”

I was shocked. As shocked as a nine year old can be.

I began laughing and jabbing him, saying, “It’s me!” I still thought he was joking.

He wasn’t .

He pushed me with such force I hit my head on the chair.

In my already fuzzy head, I thought I was going to die.

I ran to the door. He caught up with me and pushed me so hard my spine nearly broke. I’ll never forget that push. He went out the door.

“What are you doing?” I croaked.

He turned, and gave me the most evil smile I’d never seen. I shivered.

He raced towards me, and I ran, sliding under the bed, trembling in terror. Foe nine year old me, this escalated to a horror movie fast. Fast.

He got a torch, and began searching for me in the room. My heart was in my eyes.

The torch was blazing into my face, but he couldn’t see me.

For a while.

Then, in a flash of lightning, he yanked me up, and threw me to the ground, screaming unintelligible words in my face.

There was a knock on the door.

He came, literally, literally, LITERALLY, to his senses.

I was so terrified I couldn’t greet when our eldest brother walked in.

When I finally spoke, I began rambling on how we needed to get him to the church or something cause he’s possessed and he tried to kill me.

He looked at me as if I’d gone mad. What was I expecting?

I was the only one in the house before he came.
